The idea of serving fresh, homemade baby food at every meal is lovely, but for most busy parents, it's simply not realistic. This is where meal prepping becomes your superpower. By dedicating just one or two hours on a weekend, you can prepare a variety of nutritious meals to have on hand for the entire week, saving you time, money, and stress on busy weekdays.
Step 1: Plan Your Menu
Before you start cooking, have a simple plan. Choose 2-3 vegetables and 1-2 fruits that you want to prepare for the week. If your baby is older, you can also add a protein (like chicken or lentils) and a grain (like quinoa). Think about combinations. For example, if you prep sweet potatoes, pears, and chicken, you can serve them individually or mix them for a balanced meal.
Step 2: Cook in Batches Using Your Oven
The oven is your best friend for batch cooking. It allows you to cook multiple things at once with minimal hands-on time.
- Roasting: Chop hard vegetables like sweet potatoes, butternut squash, carrots, and broccoli into small pieces. Toss them with a tiny bit of olive oil and roast on a baking sheet at 400°F (200°C) until tender. Roasting brings out their natural sweetness.
- Baking: You can bake apples and pears whole or halved until they are soft. You can also bake small pieces of chicken or salmon in a foil packet at the same time.
Step 3: Puree or Mash for Texture
Once everything is cooked and cooled, decide on the texture. For younger babies, blend each food item separately with a little water, breast milk, or formula to create single-ingredient purees. For older babies, you can simply mash the soft-cooked foods with a fork or create delicious combinations in the blender.
Step 4: The Portion and Store System
This is the most crucial step for convenience.
- For the Fridge: Portion out what you'll need for the next 2-3 days into small, airtight containers.
- For the Freezer: Use the "ice cube tray hack" for the rest. Spoon purees into silicone ice cube trays, freeze until solid, and then transfer the cubes to labeled freezer bags. This creates perfect 1-ounce portions that you can thaw and mix-and-match throughout the week. For finger foods, you can freeze small portions on a baking sheet before transferring them to a bag.
With a freezer stocked full of healthy, ready-to-go options, you'll never have to stress about what to feed your baby, even on the most hectic days.
